Can You Wash a Blazer at Home?
Short answer: you can, once. Whether it survives is another matter.
Key answer
Machine-washing a blazer usually ruins it. A blazer’s structure comes from inner canvas, padding and fused interfacing — water and agitation warp these layers, and the damage is permanent. Spot-clean small marks at home; for real cleaning, a blazer needs professional dry cleaning.
What a blazer is actually made of
From outside, a blazer looks like one fabric. Inside, it is a sandwich: shell fabric, fusible or stitched interfacing in the chest and lapels, shoulder padding, sleeve headers and lining. That sandwich is what makes it hang sharply instead of drooping like a shirt.
Water soaks each layer differently. The shell may shrink 2%, the interfacing not at all — and now the front bubbles, the lapel ripples, the shoulder collapses. Pressing can’t rebuild delaminated interfacing. This is why “I washed it on gentle and it looks melted” is one of the most common stories in garment care.
What you can safely do at home
Plenty. Brush it after wearing to remove dust. Air it overnight before returning it to the wardrobe — most “needs a wash” smell is trapped moisture. Spot-clean small marks with a barely damp cloth, dabbing, never rubbing. Steam it lightly to relax wrinkles; steam is far kinder than a hot iron on lapels.
What you cannot safely do: submerge it, machine-wash it, tumble-dry it, or iron the lapels flat like a shirt collar (a lapel is supposed to roll, not crease).
When it needs a professional
Real soiling, sweat build-up around the collar, a visible stain, or the end of a season — that’s dry cleaning territory. At Fundry a blazer is inspected first, treated in solvent that leaves the structure alone, and finished on a press that respects the lapel roll. From ₹85 per piece, confirmed before work begins.
Quick questions
The label says my blazer is washable cotton. Can it be laundered?
Unstructured, unlined cotton blazers exist and some are genuinely washable — but check for fused interfacing. When in doubt, book it as dry cleaning and add a note; we inspect and choose the safer treatment.
How do I remove a smell without cleaning?
Hang it in open air (not direct harsh sun) overnight, ideally with space around it. Light steaming helps too. If odour persists, it needs a proper clean.
Will dry cleaning shrink the blazer?
Professional dry cleaning is specifically designed not to — no water, controlled process, shape-conscious finishing.
