Can You Wash a Quilt, Razai or Comforter at Home?
Before the first cold week: what a home machine can handle, what it ruins, and what cleaning costs in Hyderabad.
Key answer
A light cotton blanket or a thin comforter can go in a home machine if it fits loosely. A cotton-filled razai, a heavy double quilt or a woollen blanket should not: the filling clumps, the drum strains, and it rarely dries through before it smells musty. Those are better dry cleaned. At Fundry a double quilt is ₹400 to dry clean, with free pickup and delivery in KPHB, Nallagandla and nearby.
What a home machine can handle
The test is simple: if the blanket fills more than about three quarters of the drum when dry, it is too big. It needs room to move, or the middle stays dirty and the soap never rinses out. Light cotton blankets, fleece throws and thin polyester comforters usually pass. Use a gentle cycle, cold or lukewarm water and half the usual detergent.
Drying is where most home washes go wrong. A thick blanket can feel dry outside while the inside is still damp. Dry it flat or over two lines in the sun, turn it every few hours, and only fold it once it is dry all the way through.
What should not go in the machine
Cotton-filled razais and traditional quilts: the cotton soaks up water, gets very heavy and settles into lumps that do not shake out again. Woollen blankets shrink and felt in warm water. Heavy double quilts can overload a domestic machine. Silk or velvet quilt covers lose their finish.
Weighted blankets vary — some have washable inner layers, some do not. Check the label, and if there is none, ask for it to be checked before cleaning.
Getting blankets ready for winter
Blankets that sat in a cupboard since February pick up a stale smell and dust. A day in direct sun freshens them, but it does not clean them. If a quilt was put away without cleaning last season, clean it before you use it again — sweat and skin oils left in the filling are what attract dust mites and smells.
After cleaning, store blankets only when fully dry, in a breathable cotton bag rather than plastic, which traps moisture.
What Fundry does, and what it costs
We collect quilts, razais, comforters and blankets from your home, check the fabric and filling, and clean each one to suit it: heavier quilts and woollen blankets are dry cleaned, lighter blankets can go in Wash & Fold. A double quilt is ₹400 to dry clean. Light blankets in Wash & Fold are ₹100 per kg. Single quilts and unusual pieces are priced when we see them, before any work starts.
Allow around five days; the exact turnaround is confirmed at pickup. Early November is the best time, before everyone wants their quilts back in the same cold week.
Quick questions
How much does it cost to dry clean a quilt in Hyderabad?
At Fundry a double quilt is ₹400 to dry clean, with free pickup and delivery. Single quilts and special pieces are priced at pickup. Prices are indicative and confirmed after we inspect the item.
Can I wash a razai in a washing machine?
Not a cotton-filled one. The cotton absorbs water, becomes very heavy and clumps. Polyester-filled comforters that fit loosely in the drum are usually fine on a gentle cycle.
Should woollen blankets be dry cleaned?
Yes. Warm water and machine agitation make wool shrink and felt. Dry cleaning keeps the size and softness.
How long does blanket cleaning take?
Around five days at Fundry. The exact turnaround is confirmed at pickup, as it depends on the item and how busy the season is.
